About Basic Computer Skills Testing

Competition in careers is often fierce--and more often than not, it turns into a game of survival of the fittest. Employers have various ways of testing computer skills which may or may not determine getting that desired position.

What is Computer Skills Testing?

Computer skills testing is the measure of knowledge and competency in basic computer skills in various standard applications. Most organizations and companies test individuals on Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and Power Point.

Types of Testing

Employers may administer basic computer skills testing through hand-written, fill-in-the-blank or multiple choice question assessments. Most commonly, however, basic computer skills tests are given electronically.

Timing for Tests
Basic computer skills tests are timed. Candidates should be certain to use time wisely while taking the tests. Skip questions that are unclear and return to them later.

Specifics
On most electronic basic skills tests, there is a mock program (Word, Excel, or Outlook) and a tutorial to explain how answers should be chosen.

Test Results
With both hard copy and electronic tests, results are automatically sent to the employer. Do not ask the employer for your results; however, they may decide to speak with you about them after wards.

Misconceptions
Although basic computer tests will show potential employers your skills (or lack thereof), do not be discouraged if you do poorly. Some organizations are willing to train their employees if they do not have a strong base.
