About Basic Computer Skills for the Workplace

Computers are an integral part of many workplaces in the 21st century. Computers are used for inter-office communication, industry research, generating documents and reports, and many other functions. Hence, computer skills are not only useful, but required in today's workplace.


Job seekers need not be computer geeks to be employed, however. Learning basic computer literacy skills, such as operations, email and Internet can help those looking for jobs get a foot in the door, and open up opportunities both for employment and development of more complex computer skills.

Operations

To those who use computers regularly, it's difficult to remember a time when you didn't know how to use a mouse, the commands on a keyboard, or to adjust a monitor. For those who have few or no computer skills, these are important skills to develop.

Computer literacy begins with becoming familiar with the computer itself. Knowing how to turn the computer on and off, what buttons on the mouse perform which functions, what the function keys on the keyboard do--these are all basic computer skills needed in the workplace.

Word Processing

Word processing skills are a must when using the computer in the workplace. Word processing applications important in most business settings, and familiarity with word processing software is a skill-builder; a basic knowledge of word processing is useful for email and other Internet applications, as well.

In the workplace, knowing how to compose and save documents within a word processing program is an essential skill.


Email

Email has become one of the most important tools in the modern workplace. Taking the place of inter-office communications such as phone messages, memos and other correspondence, email both streamlines processes and eliminates paper, both of which save businesses time and money.

Knowing how to create and log-in to an email account and send and receive messages are basic skills that are usually expected in the workplace.

Printing

While email has eliminated a large measure of paper in the workplace, it is still important to have paper copies of many documents. Thus, being able to use a printer is a skill that is often required in the workplace.

Employees should, at the very least, have the ability to format and print documents from the computer, and additionally should know how to load paper and toner or ink into the printer.

Internet

Use of Internet applications is a required skill in most office environments. In addition to the use of the Internet for email, many businesses use websites and web applications for research, not to mention contact with other businesses and colleagues.

Employees should be familiar with using browsers, using search engines to perform keyword searches, visiting websites to research industry information, and finding--and possibly ordering--office supplies.
